Active duty military and TurboTax is trying to charge me for premium even though its free. I already uploaded my W-2 as proof. How do I get premium for free?

Every year turbotax makes it more and more difficult to find out how to file for free for military in hopes that I will just give up and pay their absurd fee that im not required to pay.

Edit the W-2, and on the page AFTER the DFAS W-2, there is a page with a bunch of checkboxes

...make sure you check the box (2/3 of the way down)  that indicates that the W-2 was for Military Active Duty service.

IF that box isn't checked..,,then the software doesn't realize you've entered a military W-2.

In TurboTax Online, review the questions in My Info in the upper left hand corner of the screen.

Make sure that the questions have been correctly answered at the screen Let's check for some other situations.  Make sure that you report a military W-2.

Military discount is valid for active duty and reservists of an enlisted rank (E-1 through E-9) with a W2 from DFAS,

  • Excludes National Guard members
  • Excludes TurboTax Live products
