I need to update my marital and filing status from single/ head of house hold to married / filing separate

A married taxpayer whose spouse did not live in the home during the last six months of the tax
year can be "considered unmarried" for tax purposes.  You will be able to use a filing status of
"Single" or "Head of Household," which are usually more beneficial tax wise.

If you are married and file separately, you both must itemize your deductions on each of your
returns, or both of you must take the standard deduction.

To change your filing status in TurboTax:

1.  Click on the Personal Info tab.
2.  On the Personal info Summary screen, click on Edit next to your filing status.
3.  On the Let's confirm your marital status screen mark the radio button next to Married.
4.  For the question Do you want to file this return together with your spouse? select the
No radio button and click Continue.
5. On the screen, Let's see if these apply, mark the appropriate boxes  and click Continue.
