The "same job" does not mean all of your other variables are the same. Your friend might have a tax credit that you do not get. Or he might have had more tax withheld... or his filing status might be different... or... or....or...as already suggested, the only way to know why you have different refunds would be to compare your Form 1040's side by side, line by line.
