401k and RI unemployment amounts are double-counted on Mass. Return Form 1

I have a question about my Massachusetts tax return.  My taxable wages from Fed. return are 261,591, which includes early withdrawals from my 401k (43,108 via 1099-R), as well as unemployment compensation from RI (14,976 via 1099-G).

On my Mass. Tax return, when I import this information from Fed. Tax return doc, the 401k amounts and RI unemployment are added to to 261,591 Fed wages again, resulting in ‘total MA %5.05 Income of 319,675.

To me, it appears that the 401k and Ri unemployment amounts are double-counted on Mass. Return Form 1?  Is that correct? We owe more that we expected, and it seems off.

I tried to reproduce your issue. For my fake return, I assumed you are MA resident receiving RI unemployment due to working in RI. MA as resident return would tax everything and give a credit for RI tax paid.

I was able to adjust in RI and MA for this situation. RI must be done first since it is the non-resident state, then the resident state is done.

Are my assumptions correct? Did you do the non-resident state first? Did you make the corrections for income in each state when asked?

Thank you for the response.

I think I will try to delete the MA return and start that one over, having completed Fed and RI, unless you think there is a better way. I did step through the interview several times and accounted for my RI situation, but it still seems off because total MA %5.05 wages are higher compared to Fed total Wages by exactly the 401k and RI unemployment amounts.

Do you have thoughts on  my 401k distribution I mentioned? It was added to the fed Wages/Income total on my taxable mass income, even though it was already contained in the Federal Wages that were imported into my MA return. BTW, I am married filing jointly

In summary, our wages/earnings on Fed return are shown as

W2s + 401K distribution + RI Unemployment = Total wages Fed

MA shows

Total wages Fed (W2 + 401K distribution + RI Unemployment) + (401k + RI Unemployment) = MA %5.05 taxable.

Going through MA, it asks about every income and then gives the MA Income and Deductions Summary with each item broken down. You do not mean you are seeing it there, wages, salaries, etc. but on the actual form. I just can't replicate your issue. I have added all of your items with no trouble. I hope your deleting it and going through again works. If there is still something wrong, you may want to contact a specialist that can work through that section of the return with you.
