If TurboTax Desktop incorrectly instructs to use the 2025 IRS IP PIN for tax year 2025 instead of the 2026 calendar year, you can help users update or reenter their IP PIN for the correct tax year by following these steps:
1. Open the 2025 tax return in TurboTax Desktop.
2. Select Fix my return when prompted about the IP PIN.
3. Follow the onscreen instructions to enter the correct 2025 IP PIN that corresponds to the 2026 calendar year filing.
4. After correcting the IP PIN, refile the return.
The IRS issues a new IP PIN for each tax year. For the 2025 tax return, the IP PIN corresponds to the 2026 calendar year. This mismatch can cause confusion, but the key is to enter the IP PIN provided for the tax year return you are filing (2025), which the IRS issues in early 2026.
The 2025 TurboTax Deluxe program has space for 5 digits for the IRS Pin. My taxes have been rejected 5 times in the last two days. Contacting the IRS through their website (after seeing the Banner about the Pin problem), I find that my IP Pin is now 6 digits! The program doesn't allow 6 digits to be entered. Any one else have this problem? Thanks
If you have a 6 digit PIN issued to you by the IRS you need to enter it in order to e-file.
Go to Federal>Other Tax Situations>Other Return Info>Identity Protection PIN
and enter the six-digit PIN.
In the TurboTax Deluxe, there is no Federal>Other Tax Situations>Other Return Info>Identity Protection PIN. In the Forms section, there is a Federal Tax Info page (labeled "Info Wks"). In that form, at the bottom of the page, has space for both last year, and this years PIN. However, neither allows for 6 digits. I go to the IRS. On the IRS main page, a banner indicates "If you accessed your IP Pin on Jan 6, 2026, Due to a programming issue an incorrect IP PIN displayed on Jan 6, 2026. This has been fixed the the correct IP PIN is now in your Identify Protection PIN (IP Pin). Following the link, to the IP PIN page, it shows my pin as a 6 digits. Any workaround? Thanks
To enter, edit or delete a 6 digit IP PIN
Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
Click on Other Tax Situations
Scroll down to Other Return Info
On Identity Protection PIN, click the start button
Look again.
Thanks! Forgot to mention I'm on a Mac. Couldn't find the "Other Tax Situations" as it's shown like this...
Found the location, and completed the IP 6 digits in the box. However, in checking the final forms, this did not change/revise the Pins in the appropriate boxes in the Federal Tax Information form (Info Wks). I've submitted the revised (ie 6 digit IP) after saving the new info. We'll see if the IRS accepts it now...if not I'll change everything and mail it in instead. Thanks for all your help.
@jmerk53 Looks like you are using the Home & Business edition, not the Deluxe edition.
....sigh!.
