The amount displayed in TurboTax is wrong --- higher that what was actually paid. [I checked the amount OWE on 2023 tax return.]
My Federal return shows the correct amount of 2023 tax refund (applied to 2024 taxes).
Why the discrepence in the State taxes? Do I have to worry about other mistakes in "carryovers" from 2023 tax return?

Can you clarify where you are seeing the discrepancy error?
In the Tax Payment Worksheet, Line 23 "Prior Year Taxes Paid in 2024". And it flows through to my Itemized deductions on Schedule A. [The number originates from Federal Carryover Worksheet.]
There can be other items paid. State and local taxes paid are:
-any state withholding from your paychecks, retirement checks, unemployment checks, etc.
-a state tax due (for any year) you paid last year
-any state estimated tax payments you made during year including an overpayment applied from last year
-any local taxes withheld on your checks like SDI in box 14 or 19 on your W2
"-any state estimated tax payments you made during year including an overpayment applied from last year"
This is the only item I have is that I paid state estimated taxes in 2024. I have no overpayment from 2023 -- since I had an amount due when filing 2023 taxes and paid it in 2024 upon filing.
I have no withholdings of any sort. Even if I had, it would be withheld in 2024 and had no relevance to "2023 state taxes paid in 2024".
Please clarify your question so we can help you.
As I stated in my original post: "The amount displayed in TurboTax is wrong --- higher that what was actually paid. [I checked the amount OWE on 2023 tax return.]....."
I paid a balance due on my 2023 State Tax Return in April 2024 when I filed 2023 return.
For 2024 tax return, when Turbotax transfer the info from my 2023 tax return, the State Tax Paid in 2024 for 2023 tax return is not what I actually paid. the number shown on the 2024 worksheet is higher that what I actually paid.
Why is that happening?
If you paid State Estimated Taxes after 12/31/2023, and the amount shown on the Federal Carryover Worksheet is higher than that amount, there must be some other state tax added to the amount of your estimated payment.
Did you have a state refund from 2023 that may have been included here? If you don't believe this amount is correct, you can enter the correct amount to flow to the Tax Payments Worksheet.
