I just filed my Federal and State of Michigan Taxes. Last year (for the year 2021) I was able to file the City of Detroit Return as part of my State of Michigan tax return. This year the City of Detroit Tax return was not prepared by the Turbo Tax Software and there is no actual City of Detroit Tax return in the saved documents after downloading copies of the tax returns. I did state in the various questions that were asked of me whether I needed a City of Detroit return prepared and I answered yes. What did I do incorrectly?

The main thing you need to do is indicate when asked that you need a Detroit City tax return. I suggest you go back through the questions in the state return again and make sure you answered the ones regaring Detroit properly.

Thank you for your reply. I recall answering that question (the answer I clicked on or believe I clicked on) was the non-resident option. It is possible that I didn't do that correctly but now that I have actually filed my State of Michigan return, can I go back and electronically file the City of Detroit tax return? Or do I now have to file the City of Detroit on paper? Thanks for your help.
The City of Detroit return is an attachment to the Michigan return in TurboTax. I am afraid that you will have to mail it in if you have already filed your michigan return.
Thanks for your help!
In the previous years I would have a similar issue (Detroit City Tax would hang in limbo until I was told to mail it). This year I noticed the NOTE below. However, there is nothing within the Tax Summary about my Detroit City Tax Return (TT lists the Federal and State). Since the note below is the only message that I've seen that relates to the City Tax Return, I'm not sure if my State return will deposit my City Tax Refund as well...
Can Intuit add a feature to help the UX (user experience) for local tax returns? It should be extremely clear as to what is happening for all three tax entities.
The Detroit return is filed with the Michigan return. That message explains it pretty clearly. This is a new feature this year.
