2021 tax refund not received yet

After repeated calls over a two year period to the IRS about a 2021 tax refund, they are now requesting a letter from my company stating date of employment, gross wages and withholding, for the year 2021. The W2 was initially provided but they want this letter too. They said give them an additional 120 days to process.

Is this normal practice? The return was prepared via TurboTax and the IRS never requested additional information until today.  Should interest also be included for this two year period?

It is frustrating when you have to wait so long to have your return accepted and finalized.

The only thing I can think is that maybe the company never sent the IRS a copy of the W2 or the W2 just was not received even though they sent it.  The IRS matches what is on your return to documents sent on your behalf.

You can go to https://www.irs.gov/payments/your-online-account  create an account, then go to Tax Records, Get Tax Transcripts, reason and GO.  This will pull up all of your wage and income transcripts that were sent to the IRS on your behalf.   Click on 2021 to see what was sent.

If you do not see that W2 in the 2021 wage and income transcript that that would confirm my first idea.

I do suggest that whenever you send the IRS something, please send it certified mail so that you have a record of when you sent it.  I would also keep a copy of everything you send.

When the refund is finally sent out, you should received interest in addition to the refund.
