Turbo Tax couldn't answer the question either through faqs,, the community or telephone automated responses.  I finally, after a number of tries I got an agent who told me to add another state, then tell TT I wanted to print the returns, without the added state, which I never added, then TT would give me the option of accessing the TT worksheets with all the supporting schedules.  The agent explained that even though the page say "Download Tax Files", I can't download them without TT software.  No way I could have figured this out without the agent telling me what to do.

TT does a GREAT job preparing returns, but makes it VERY difficult to go outside the box and adjust initial input.    Obviously the programs are written by non-CPA's/non accountants.

The "tax file" for TurboTax is a proprietary data format made specifically for TurboTax products. The files have the file type of ".tax2019" (or whatever year this file is for). This format cannot be read by most other software, such as Adobe.

Adobe Acrobat handle files in one of many PDF formats (there are many versions of PDF in circulation). Normally, a PDF file will have the file type of ".pdf". However, occasionally file types get lost.

If you open a file using Notepad or a hex editor that you suspect of being a pdf file, the beginning of the file will be "%PDF-1.X" where "X" is a digit indicating the release. For example, the 2018 version of TurboTax created pdf file with "%PDF-1.5".

Once you identify a file as a PDF file, then you can rename the file type to be ",pdf" and then Acrobat will open the file automatically.
