2 years ago I graduated with a F1 visa and worked with OPT for a year, and then with a H1B which was approved in August 2018. Am I a resident or a non resident alien?

Just to provide more detail. My OPT expired last year in July and I was able to keep working because in August my H1B was approved. I'm not sure whether I'm considered a resident or non resident in 2018. Appreciate the help!

From August 1st 2018 through the end of the year you would still be a Non-Resident Alien, so you would need to file form 1040-NR ( TurboTax does not support this form) -- see SprinTax ( Turbo partner ), tax professional or your school's foreign student's office.

When did you enter the country with F-1 ? if it is any time earlier than 2014, then  you are a resident alien for tax purposes and need to file form 1040 ( use TurboTax )

Which country are you from ?

Hey! Thanks for your prompt response!

I'm from Venezuela. My f1 visa was issued in May 2013, and I first entered the US with the f1 in August 2013. My f1 status ended in August 2018 when my OPT expired. And my h1 b started to be effective in September of 2018. Am I eligible to file as a non resident?

Thanks!

Your exempt period ended in 2017 and so you started counting days towards Substantial Presence Test from Jan 1st. 2018.  Thus you are a resident alien for tax purposes for the year. You need to file your return using form 1040 ( supported by TurboTax).  Just a normal return -- TurboTax will walk you through this -- welcome to the taxpayer society -- you will love it (LOL )
