2 employers. Maxed out SS tax when entered first W2. 2nd employer also took SS tax. Shouldn't I see all of that returned to me? Why did what I owe not change?

Should the 2nd overage of $4K reduce what I owe?

Yes.  If you are married, be sure both W2s are entered for the same spouse.

You get excess SS back if you had more than 1 employer and those employers took out more than the max for Social Security tax in W2 box 4.  For 2023 the max for Social Security is $9,932.40 on $160,200 of wages (160,200 x 6.2%).  And it is for each spouse separately if married.  Check 1040 Schedule 3 line 11 which goes to 1040 line 31.

Or post back with the amounts in boxes 3&4.

For tax year 2023, you'll have excess Social Security withholdings if the sum of multiple employers' withholdings exceeds $9,932.40 per taxpayer.

You don't need to take any action.  We'll automatically add the excess to your federal refund or subtract it from federal taxes you owe, whichever applies.

The excess will appear as a tax credit on Line 11 of your Form 1040, Schedule 3.

TurboTax automatically does this, so you won't see the increase from this credit separately.   Check Schedule 3 for the credit.
