17 Year old son & taxes

Hello,

My son is 17 years old and has had part time job for the last few months, in years past as always we have claimed him as a dependent on our taxes (me and my wife file jointly). How much income does my son need to make before he has to file a tax return under his name and do we still get to claim him as a dependent being he is under 18?

Yes you can still claim him as a dependent under 18 and under 24 if he is a full time student no matter how much he makes.

You don't include their income on your return. It would only go on their return if they are required to file one. To file a separate return for your dependent you need to set up a new account. Online is only good for one return per account. You can use the same email address for 5 accounts. They can probably use the Free Edition. How to start a new online return

Be sure on their return they check the box that says they can be claimed on someone else’s return. If their only income is W2 and under 12,550 they do not have to file a return except to get back any withholding taken out.  But if they have any 1099 self employment income they have to file a return.
