1098 form (mortgage interest statement) - property (real estate) tax paid

Dear friends of the Turbotax community,

On my 1098 form, there is nothing in box 5, and there is nothing about how much property tax I paid.  However, in Turbotax 2024, when entering the 1098 form, underneath Box5 - Mortgage insurance premiums, there is a separate line says "property (real estate) tax paid" and a place for me to enter a number.  Shall I enter the property tax that I already paid after I purchased the property?  If I already paid property tax for a year, what's the number for me to enter here?

Thanks a lot!

If your Form 1098 doesn't list the property tax you paid, which is probably because you paid it directly to your local assessor rather than through your lender, you can enter the property tax you paid in 2024 in the Taxes section of TurboTax, under Property Taxes.

If you paid your property taxes yourself directly to a county or other jurisdiction, you should have a property tax statement and record of payment. You may also be able to get the information online from your county assessor or other tax agency.

See this TurboTax tips article for more information about property taxes.
