I did a tax projection for a relative who resides in Wisconsin before 4/15 and entered their information in turbo tax. Income was below filing requirements so there was no tax due and no returns were filed for federal or state. They now discovered a corrected 1099 I didnt have. Now turbo tax indicates federal taxes of $424 and $80 for state. Question. No underpayment penalty is owed at this point (4/29/26) as I understand for taxes owed under $1000. My question is what about the failure to file penalty? Where does a filing date get entered. I understand the failure to file is 5% of any tax due. Turbo tax shows no penalties due. How do I correct this?

The date the IRS accepts the return is the "filing date." Your best option is to file the return as soon as possible, pay the tax due and wait for the IRS to determine any penalties and interest. You have good reason for not filing by the deadline so you may be able to avoid the penalty for failure to file.

TurboTax cannot calculate penalties for failure to file or failure to pay, and there is no way to include those penalties on Form 1040. Just file the returns. The IRS and state will bill the taxpayer for the penalties, if any.
Thanks. That’s what I finally assumed. Thanks for confirming. It’s appreciated.
Thank you.
