Windows 7 end of support impact for TurboTax

Our latest products won’t work with Windows 7, because as of January 2020, Microsoft will no longer be providing security updates or support for PCs running Windows 7. For tax year 2020, all TurboTax desktop products require Windows 8 or higher to install. We strongly recommend that desktop customers using Windows 7 upgrade to Windows 10 before installing a new product.

While you can still use TurboTax 2019 on Windows 7, you can’t newly install the software. And there are a couple risks in continuing to use Windows 7:

  • Your computer will be more vulnerable to security risks and viruses, because Microsoft will no longer provide security updates and support for your PC.
  • You won’t be able to install future versions of TurboTax on your PC. You’ll need to upgrade to a newer version of Windows to run TurboTax 2020.

If you’re still using TurboTax 2019 and don’t want to upgrade your operating system just yet, you can transfer your 2019 info from TurboTax CD/Download to TurboTax Online by following these instructions.

If you’re using TurboTax Online, there’s no impact to you as long as you meet the minimum system requirements.

You’ll still be able to import your prior year return if you upgrade to Windows 10.

If you have older versions of TurboTax from prior years, you’ll be able to continue using them both on Windows 7 or on higher versions of Windows if you upgrade.

To return your TurboTax software, complete this form.

If you purchased your software but would like to switch to TurboTax Online, follow these instructions.

Visit Microsoft’s Windows 7 site if you need help updating Windows on your PC.

The system requirements for newer versions of Windows are the same as Windows 7. You can confirm your computer will support Windows 10 by reviewing Microsoft’s system requirements.

Your other software should work with an upgraded operating system. Check the system requirements for each one to see if it supports your new operating system version.

Visit the Windows Support Page if you need help updating and installing Windows 10 on your PC.
