Because Microsoft is no longer providing security updates or support for PCs running Windows 7, we strongly recommend that desktop customers using Windows 7 upgrade to Windows 10 before installing their product.
TurboTax for tax year 2019 will install on Windows 7, but when TurboTax for tax year 2020 is released, all TurboTax desktop products will cease installing on Windows 7.
And while you can still use TurboTax 2019 on Windows 7, there are a couple risks in doing so:
- Your computer will be more vulnerable to security risks and viruses because Microsoft will no longer provide security updates and support for your PC.
- You won’t be able to install future versions of TurboTax on your PC. You’ll need to upgrade to a newer version of Windows next year.
If you don’t want to upgrade your operating system now, you can use TurboTax Online to complete your taxes this year. These instructions can help you switch from TurboTax CD/Download to TurboTax Online.
If you’re using TurboTax Online, there’s no impact to you as long as you meet the minimum system requirements.
You’ll still be able to import your prior year return if you upgrade to Windows 10.
If you have older versions of TurboTax from prior years, you’ll be able to continue using them both on Windows 7 or on higher versions of Windows if you upgrade.
If you’re upgrading and want to know more about the impact that has on other software you use, check the system requirements for that specific software to see if it supports your new version of Windows.
