Coronavirus Relief for State Income Taxes

This is a summary of how each state is handling income tax filing and payment deadline changes as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, with links to official state information.

Alabama (AL) extended the April 15 deadline for individual and corporation income tax returns and payments to July 15. This includes 2020 estimated tax payments that were originally due April 15. Composite returns and payments due March 15 have also been extended to July 15.

Alaska (AK) doesn't collect personal income tax. Corporation income tax payment and estimated tax deadlines ranging from April 15 through July 14 are now due July 15, and the return filing date has been extended to August 14. Read the notice.

Arizona (AZ) extended the April 15 deadline for 2019 individual, corporation, and fiduciary income tax returns and payments to July 15. Estimated tax payments for 2020 aren't included in the extension.

Arkansas (AR) extended the April 15 deadline for 2019 individual, S corporation, fiduciary and estates, partnership, and composite income tax returns and payments to July 15. 2019 corporation income taxes along with first- and second-quarter estimated tax payments for 2020 aren't included. California (CA) extended the April 15 deadline for 2019 income tax returns and payments to July 15, including first- and second-quarter estimated tax payments for 2020. Also included are corporations (including S), partnerships, LLCs, and other entities with filing or payment deadlines from March 16 through July 15. Colorado (CO) extended the April 15 deadline for 2019 income tax returns and payments to July 15. This also includes 2020 estimated tax payments that were originally due April 15 through June 15.

Connecticut (CT) extended the 2020 deadlines for income tax returns and payments, including estimated tax payments, to July 15. See the COVID-19 response FAQs.

Delaware (DE) extended the April deadlines for individual, corporation, and fiduciary income tax returns and payments, including first-quarter estimated tax payments for 2020, to July 15. Second-quarter estimated payments are still due June 15. See the memorandum.

District of Columbia (DC) extended the April 15 deadline for 2019 income tax returns and payments to July 15. Estimated tax payments for 2020 aren't included in the extension. Read the notice.

Florida (FL) doesn't collect personal income tax, but they have posted Covid-19 information for other types of taxes.

Georgia (GA) extended the April 15 deadline for 2019 income tax returns and payments to July 15. This also includes 2020 estimated tax payments that were originally due April 15 and June 15. Read the tax relief FAQs.

Hawaii (HI) extended all April 20 through June 20 filing and payment deadlines for 2019 individual and corporation income tax returns to July 20. Read the press release. Estimated tax payments for 2020 aren't included in the extension per this announcement.

Idaho (ID) extended the April 15 deadline for 2019 individual, trusts and estates, and corporation income tax returns and payments to June 15. This also includes first- and second-quarter estimated tax payments for 2020. In addition, the deadline to apply for various property tax relief programs has been extended to June 15. Illinois (IL) extended the April 15 deadline for 2019 individual, corporation, and trust income tax returns and payments to July 15. Estimated tax payments for 2020 aren't included in the extension. Read the bulletin.

Indiana (IN) extended the April 15 deadline for individual income tax returns and payments, including first-quarter estimated tax payments for 2020, to July 15. In addition, the April deadline for corporation returns and corporation estimated tax payments has been extended to July 15; those originally due May 15 now have until August 17. Iowa (IA) extended all March 19 through July 30 filing and payment deadlines for individual, corporation (including S), fiduciary, partnership, and composite income tax returns to July 31. Estimated tax payments for 2020 aren't included in the extension. Read the release.

Kansas (KS) extended the April 15 deadline for individual, corporation, and fiduciary income tax returns and payments to July 15. Estimated tax payments for 2020 aren't included in the extension. In addition, the filing deadline for homestead and property tax relief claims has been extended to October 15. Read Executive Order #20-13.

Kentucky (KY) extended the April 15 deadline for 2019 individual, corporate, limited liability, fiduciary, and pass-through entity income tax returns and payments to July 15. The state is adopting the income tax relief in IRS Notice 2020-18, which means first-quarter estimated tax payments for 2020 will also be extended to July 15. Read the news release.

Louisiana (LA) extended the April 15 and May 15 deadlines for 2019 individual, partnership, corporation, and fiduciary income tax returns and payments to July 17.

Fiscal-year income tax and franchise tax filers with original due dates between March 1 and May 30 get an automatic 60-day filing and payment extension from the original due date. No mention of 2020 estimated tax payments, so assume those due dates haven't been extended. Read the bulletin.

Maine (ME) extended the April 15 deadline for individual, corporation, estate, trust, and franchise income tax returns and payments. This also includes 2020 estimated tax payments that were originally due April 15. Read the alert.

Maryland (MD) extended April 15 filing and payment deadlines for 2019 individual, corporation, fiduciary, and pass-through entity income tax returns and payments to July 15. This also includes first- and second-quarter estimated tax payments for 2020. Fiscal-year filers with tax years ending January, February, or March of 2020 also get until to July 15 to file and pay. Massachusetts (MA) extended the April 15 deadline for 2019 individual, estate and trust, and partnership composite income tax returns and payments to July 15. This also includes first- and second-quarter estimated tax payments for 2020. Read the release.

Michigan (MI) extended the April 15 filing and payment deadlines for individual, trust, estate, and corporation state and city income taxes, including Detroit, to July 15. This includes first- and second-quarter estimated tax payments for 2020. The April 30 filing and payment deadlines for certain city, corporation, and other entities is now extended to July 31.  See the deadline change FAQs.

Minnesota (MN) extended the April 15 deadline for 2019 individual income tax returns and payments to July 15. Estimated tax payments for 2020 aren't included in the extension. Read the release.

Although the April 15 deadline for corporation franchise, S corporation, partnership, and fiduciary taxes remains unaffected, the filing (not payment) deadline will automatically be extended to match the date of any federal extension for that entity (for C corporations, the extended filing date would be the later of November 15 or the extended federal deadline). Mississippi (MS) extended the April deadline for 2019 individual and corporation income tax returns and payments to July 15. First-quarter estimated tax payments for 2020 are also extended to July 15. See their Extension Notice.

Missouri (MO) extended the April 15 deadline for personal, corporation, estate, and trust income tax returns and payments to July 15. This also includes 2020 estimated tax payments that were originally due April 15. Read the press release.

Montana (MT) extended the April 15 deadline for 2019 individual income tax returns and payments to July 15. No mention of 2020 estimated tax payments, so assume those due dates haven't been extended. Read the bulletin.

Nebraska (NE) extended the April 15 through July 14 filing and payment deadlines for 2019 individual, trust, estate, corporation, and other non-corporate entities to July 15. This also includes first-quarter estimated tax payments for 2020. See the FAQs.

Nevada (NV) doesn't collect income tax and although all state offices are closed to the public, they are reachable by phone and email.

New Hampshire (NH) extended the April 15 deadline for 2019 business (BPT and BET) and interest & dividend (I&D) returns to June 15. Business filers who owed $50,000 or less in total BPT and BET tax liability for 2018 as well as I&D filers who owed $10,000 or less in taxes for 2018 qualify for the relief.

In addition, taxpayers who pay by April 15 the amount they owed in tax year 2018 won't incur penalties or interest as long as they file and pay in full by November 15. Finally, estimated tax payments for 2020 may qualify for the June 15 extension under certain conditions; these are further detailed in the press release.

New Jersey (NJ) extended the April 15 deadline for individual, partnership, and corporation returns and payments to July 15. This also includes first-quarter estimated tax payments for 2020. See their COVID-19 Extension page.

New Mexico (NM) extended the April 15 deadline for 2019 individual, fiduciary, and corporation income tax returns and payments to July 15. This also includes first- and second-quarter estimated tax payments for 2020. Read the bulletin. Please note that interest will not be charged on first-quarter estimated tax payments made by July 15 per this news release.

New York State (NYS) extended the April 15 deadline for 2019 individual, corporation, and fiduciary (estate and trust) returns and payments to July 15. This also includes 2020 estimated tax payments that were originally due April 15. Read the notice.

New York City (NYC) is waiving late-filing, late-payment, and underpayment penalties for business and excise taxes due between March 16 and April 25. Interest, if applicable, still applies. Read the memorandum.

North Carolina (NC) extended the April 15 filing and payment deadline for individual, corporation, partnership, and estate and trust income taxes, including first-quarter estimated payments for 2020, to July 15. Due to state law, interest will start accruing on payments received after April 15 per this press release. See also their Frequently-Asked Questions and Important Notice dated March 23.

North Dakota (ND) extended the April 15 deadline for income tax returns and payments to July 15. This includes first- and second-quarter estimated tax payments for 2020. Read the COVID-19 tax guidance.

Ohio (OH) extended the April 15 deadline for income tax filing and payment, including school district income tax, to July 15. This also includes first- and second-quarter estimated tax payments for 2020. Read the news release.

Oklahoma (OK) extended the April 15 deadline for income tax filing and payment, including first-quarter estimated tax payments for 2020, to July 15. See their COVID-19 page.

Oregon (OR) extended the April 15 deadline for 2019 personal income tax returns and payments to July 15. Estimated tax payments for 2020 aren't included in the extension. The May 15 deadline for 2019 corporation income tax returns and payments is extended to July 15. Returns and payments due after May 15 are not extended at this time, nor are estimated tax payments for 2020. Read the news release.

Pennsylvania (PA) extended the April 15 deadline for 2019 personal income tax returns and payments, to July 15. This also includes first- and second-quarter estimated tax payments for 2020. Read the press release.

Rhode Island (RI) extended the April 15 deadline for 2019 individual and calendar-year entity income tax returns and payments to July 15. This also includes 2020 estimated tax payments that were originally due April 15. Read the advisory.

South Carolina (SC) extended the April 15 deadline for individual, corporation, and trust income tax returns and payments, including first-quarter estimated tax payments for 2020, to July 15. Read the information letter.

South Dakota (SD) doesn't collect income tax and their revenue offices are closed to the public until May 4.

Tennessee (TN) extended the filing and payment date of the Hall income tax from April 15 to July 15. Read the notice.

Texas (TX) doesn't collect income tax, but they have established a COVID-19 News page for sales and other taxes.

Utah (UT) extended the deadline for 2019 individual, corporation, and pass-through entity income tax returns and payments to July 15. No mention of 2020 estimated tax payments, so assume those due dates haven't been extended. Read the news release.

Vermont (VT) extended the April 15 deadline for individual, corporation, and fiduciary income tax returns and payments, including first-quarter estimated tax payments for 2020, to July 15. The extension also applies to homestead declaration and property tax credit claims. Read the press release.

Virginia (VA) will waive late-payment penalties for individual, corporation, and fiduciary income taxes (including estimated tax payments) due April 1 through June 1, as long as they are paid by June 1. Tax return filing deadlines remain unchanged.

Interest will accrue on payments received after the original (not extended) filing deadline and "if full payment of the amount owed during the period is not made by June 1, 2020, this penalty waiver will not apply, and late payment penalties will accrue from the original date that the payment was due." Washington (WA) doesn't collect income tax but has established a Business Relief During COVID-19 Pandemic page for other business-related taxes.

West Virginia (WV) extended the April 15 deadline for 2019 individual, trust, estate, and corporation income tax returns and payments to July 15. This also includes 2020 estimated tax payments that were originally due April 15 through June 15. See Administrative Notice 2020-16 and their Questions and Answers page.

Wisconsin (WI) extended the April 15 deadline for income tax returns and payments, including first-quarter estimated payments for 2020, to July 15. The relief applies to individuals, trusts, estates, partnerships, associations, companies, and corporations. Read the release.

Wyoming (WY) doesn't collect income tax but they have posted some COVID-19 updates for other types of taxes.
