State income tax deadlines

The federal tax filing deadline has been extended to May 17, 2021. Look for your state below to see how they’re handling income tax filing and payment deadline changes as a result of the federal update.

The IRS has further extended the tax deadline for disaster victims in Tennessee, Alabama, and Kentucky. If you were impacted by severe spring storms in one of these states, keep reading to find out more about this extension.*

Alabama (AL) extended the deadline to file 2020 personal and business tax returns to May 17. Tax payments, including first quarter 2021 estimated tax payments, are still due on April 15. Late filing and payment penalties will be waived through May 17, but interest on late payments will begin accruing beginning April 15. For more info, see the Department of Revenue statement.

*Victims of the severe spring storms in Alabama now have until August 2 to file individual and business returns and make various payments. This includes first and second quarter tax payments, quarterly payroll and excise tax returns, and 2020 IRA contributions. Certain tax-exempt organizations also benefit from the extension. Penalties on deposits due on or after March 25 and before April 9 will be abated if the deposits were made by April 9. See the IRS news release for more details.

Alaska (AK) doesn't collect personal income tax. Corporation income tax payments and estimated taxes are still due April 15.

Arizona (AZ) extended the deadline for 2020 income tax returns and payments to May 17. First quarter 2021 estimated tax payments are still due on April 15. Arkansas (AR) extended the deadline for 2020 income tax returns and payments to May 17. First quarter 2021 estimated tax payments are still due on April 15. Business income and franchise tax returns and payments are also still due April 15. For more info, see the Governor's press release.

California (CA) extended the deadline for 2020 income tax returns and payments to May 17. First quarter 2021 estimated tax payments are still due on April 15. Corporations (including S), partnerships, LLCs, and other entities with filing or payment deadlines are also still due April 15. For more info, visit the California Franchise Tax Board.

Colorado (CO) extended the deadline for 2020 income tax returns and payments to May 17. First quarter 2021 estimated tax payments are still due on April 15. Business income and franchise tax returns and payments are also still due April 15. For more info, visit the Colorado Department of Revenue.

Connecticut (CT) extended the deadline for 2020 income tax returns and payments to May 17. First quarter 2021 estimated tax payments are still due on April 15. Delaware (DE) extended the deadline for 2020 income tax returns and payments to May 17. First quarter 2021 estimated tax payments are still due on April 15. Business income and franchise tax returns and payments are also still due April 15. For more info, visit the Delaware Department of Revenue.

District of Columbia (DC) extended the deadline for 2020 income tax returns and payments to May 17. First quarter 2021 estimated tax payments are still due on April 15. Corporations (including S), partnerships, LLCs, and other entities with filing or payment deadlines are also still due April 15. For more info, visit the DC Office of Tax and Revenue.

Florida (FL) doesn't collect personal income tax. Corporation income tax payments and estimated taxes are still due April 15.

Georgia (GA) extended the deadline for 2020 income tax returns and payments to May 17. First quarter 2021 estimated tax payments are still due on April 15. Hawaii (HI) has not extended filing and payment deadlines for 2020 individual and corporation income tax returns—they are still due April 20. For more information, see the Department of Taxation press release

Idaho (ID) extended the deadline for 2020 individual and fiduciary income tax returns and payments to May 17. First quarter 2021 estimated tax payments are also extended to May 17. Illinois (IL) extended the deadline for 2020 income tax returns and payments to May 17. First quarter 2021 estimated tax payments are still due on April 15. Business income and franchise tax returns and payments are also still due April 15. For more info, see the Governor's press release.

Indiana (IN) extended the deadline for 2020 income tax returns and payments to May 17. First quarter 2021 estimated tax payments are still due on April 15. Business income and franchise tax returns and payments are also still due April 15. For more info, see the Department of Revenue announcement.

Iowa (IA) extended the deadline for 2020 income tax returns, payments to June 1. First quarter 2021 estimated tax payments are also extended to June 1. Business income and franchise tax returns and payments are also still due April 30. For more info, see the Department of Revenue.

Kansas (KS) extended the deadline for 2020 income tax returns and payments to May 17. First quarter 2021 estimated tax payments are still due on April 15. Business income and franchise tax returns and payments are also still due April 15. For more info, see the Governor's statement.

Kentucky (KY) extended the deadline for 2020 income tax returns and payments to May 17. First quarter 2021 estimated tax payments are still due on April 15. Business income and franchise tax returns and payments are also still due April 15. For more info, visit the Kentucky Department of Revenue.

Louisiana (LA) extended the deadline for 2020 personal and business income tax returns and payments to June 15. First quarter 2021 estimated tax payments, however, are still due on April 15. For more info, see the Louisiana Department of Revenue bulletin.

Maine (ME) extended the deadline for 2020 income tax returns and payments to May 17. First quarter 2021 estimated tax payments and business returns and payments aren't included in the extension, are still due on April 15. For more info, see the Governor's announcement.

Maryland (MD) extended the filing and payment deadlines for 2020 individual, corporation, fiduciary, and pass-through entity income tax returns and payments to July 15. This also includes first- and second-quarter estimated tax payments for 2021, which are now due July 15. See the Comptroller's news release.

Massachusetts (MA) extended the deadline for 2020 income tax returns and payments to May 17. First quarter 2021 estimated tax payments and business returns and payments aren't included in the extension, are still due on April 15. For more info, see the Department of Revenue's release.

Michigan (MI)  extended the deadline for 2020 income tax returns and payments to May 17. First quarter 2021 estimated tax payments and business returns and payments aren't included in the extension, are still due on April 15. For more info, see the Department of Treasury notice.

Minnesota (MN) extended the deadline for 2020 income tax returns and payments to May 17. First quarter 2021 estimated tax payments and business returns and payments aren't included in the extension, are still due on April 15. For more info, see the Department of Revenue release.

Missouri (MO) extended the deadline for 2020 income tax returns and payments to May 17. First quarter 2021 estimated tax payments and business returns and payments aren't included in the extension, are still due on April 15. For more info, see the Governor's announcement.

Montana (MT) extended the deadline for 2020 income tax returns and payments to May 17. First quarter 2021 estimated tax payments and business returns and payments aren't included in the extension, are still due on April 15. For more info, see the Governor's press release.

Nebraska (NE) extended the deadline for 2020 income tax returns and payments to May 17. First quarter 2021 estimated tax payments and business returns and payments aren't included in the extension, are still due on April 15. For more info, see the Department of Revenue press release.

Nevada (NV) doesn't collect income tax, but you can now schedule an appointment with the state Department of Taxation.

New Hampshire (NH) has not extended filing and payment deadlines for 2020 individual and corporation income tax returns—they are still due April 15. For more information, see the Department of Revenue notice

New Jersey (NJ) extended the deadline for 2020 income tax returns and payments to May 17. First quarter 2021 estimated tax payments and business returns and payments aren't included in the extension, are still due on April 15. For more info, see the Treasury news release.

New Mexico (NM) extended the deadline for 2020 income tax returns and payments to May 17. First quarter 2021 estimated tax payments and business returns and payments aren't included in the extension, are still due on April 15. For more info, see the Taxation and Revenue press release.

New York (NY) extended the deadline for 2020 income tax returns and payments to May 17. First quarter 2021 estimated tax payments and business returns and payments aren't included in the extension, are still due on April 15. For more info, see the Department of Taxation and Finance notice.

New York City (NYC) has not extended the deadline, but is waiving certain penalties for business taxes paid until May 17 upon request. Interest, if applicable, still applies. Read the memorandum for more info.

North Carolina (NC) extended the deadline for 2020 income tax returns and payments to May 17. First quarter 2021 estimated tax payments and business returns and payments aren't included in the extension, are still due on April 15. For more info, see the Department of Revenue press release.

North Dakota (ND) extended the deadline for 2020 income tax returns and payments to May 17. First quarter 2021 estimated tax payments and business returns and payments aren't included in the extension, are still due on April 15. For more info, see the ND Tax guidance.

Oklahoma (OK) extended the deadline for income and business tax payments, including first-quarter estimated tax payments for 2021, to June 15. See their press release.

Oregon (OR) extended the deadline for 2020 personal income tax returns and payments to May 17. First-quarter estimated tax payments for 2021 and business tax returns and payments aren't included in the extension, and are still due April 15. Visit the Oregon Department of Revenue.

Pennsylvania (PA) extended the deadline for 2020 personal income tax returns and payments to May 17. First-quarter estimated tax payments for 2021 and business tax returns and payments aren't included in the extension, and are still due April 15. See the Pennsylvania press release for more info.

Rhode Island (RI) extended the deadline for 2020 personal income tax returns and payments to May 17. First-quarter estimated tax payments for 2021 and business tax returns and payments aren't included in the extension, and are still due April 15. South Carolina (SC) extended the deadline for 2020 personal income tax returns and payments to May 17. First-quarter estimated tax payments for 2021 and business tax returns and payments aren't included in the extension, and are still due April 15. Read the information letter.

Tennessee (TN) extended the deadline for 2020 personal income tax returns and payments to May 17. Individuals who file a Tennessee franchise and excise tax return using Schedule J2 also have until May 17 to file and pay. First-quarter estimated tax payments for 2021 and all other business returns aren't included in the extension, and are still due April 15. See the Revenue Department news for more info.
