2019 Rideshare Import

At TurboTax, we're committed to helping you get your maximum refund through ensuring your return is filed with 100% accuracy. Unfortunately, we recently became aware of an issue that affected the accuracy of your 2019 tax return. When you imported your Uber income, some of your rideshare income and expenses weren't categorized correctly.

We've worked with Uber to resolve this issue; however, you'll need to take steps to correct your previously filed tax return. In order to have an accurate tax return, you need to check and, if necessary, amend your tax return(s) and if you have an underpayment of tax, pay the amount due on or before July 15, 2020, to avoid penalties and interest.

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you. If you need our help, we’ve provided contact information at the bottom of this page.

There are no additional fees for checking your TurboTax return or for preparing an amendment. To check and correct your return, please follow the steps below.

  1. Locate your Uber tax summary. You can get this by signing into your Uber account and selecting the Tax Information tab. Then select Download by your 2019 Yearly Summary.
  2. Launch TurboTax and open your 2019 return.
  3. Before you make any changes, select File and Save As... then add Amended 2019 return to the file name to preserve your original return.
  4. Select Online and Check for Updates. Allow the program to update if any are available.
  5. Select the Personal tab and then select Other Tax Situations. You may be asked to answer a few preliminary questions before you see a list of categories. Scroll down to Other Tax Forms and select Start next to Amend a Return.
  6. On the We’ll help you change (amend) your return screen, tap Continue. Then on the Did you already file your return? screen, select Yes, I have already filed my return. Then select I was contacted by TurboTax and told I may need to amend for some other reason, and then Continue.
  7. On the Tell us which returns you want to amend screen, choose to amend both your federal and state returns, and select Continue. Your refund/balance due tracker will reset, usually to $0, at this point. This is normal.
  8. On the What do you need to change on your return? screen, scroll down to the bottom and select Update next to the Business Income and Expenses topic.
  9. When asked How do you want to enter your personal income? find and tap the Business tab at the top of the screen. At the Let’s find some business deductions screen, choose Continue.
  10. On the How do you want to enter your business income screen, choose I’ll choose what I work on. Then next to the Business Income and Expenses category, choose Start or Update. Find the line of work where you entered income and expenses for Uber and select Edit.
  11. There are four different categories to check:

      • First, scroll down to Business Income and choose Start or Update. Then find General Income and choose Start or Update. Check to see if you have a line item for Uber - Gross Trip Earnings in TurboTax. It should match the Gross Trip Earnings entry on your Uber tax summary. If the amount entered in TurboTax doesn't match, correct it.
      • Second, on the same screen in TurboTax look for an entry for Uber - Total Additional Earnings and edit it to match the amount on your Uber tax summary. If you don't have Total Additional Earnings on your Uber tax summary, delete the Total Additional Earnings entry in TurboTax. When you've finished, select Continue. On the Business Income screen, select Continue again.
      • Third, scroll down to Business Expenses and find Other Common Business Expenses. Select Start or Update. Scroll down to Taxes and Licenses and select Start or Update. On the Enter Your Tax and License Expenses screen, delete any of the following entries if you have them:

        • Select Continue to proceed.
      • Finally, from the Let’s write off some business expenses screen, scroll down to Other Miscellaneous Expenses and select Start or Update. On the Any Miscellaneous Expenses? screen, delete any of the following entries if you have them:
        • Uber - Service fee,
        • Uber - Black Car Fund,
