2019 Electric Vehicle Credit

Because of an error in a TurboTax calculation, you've overstated your federal electric vehicle credit, leading to a possible underpayment of your income tax.

We fixed the issue in TurboTax and we want to make sure your tax return is complete and accurate. We recommend you check to determine whether any additional tax is due, and, if necessary, amend your federal tax return. There are no additional fees for checking your TurboTax return or for preparing an amendment. If you have additional tax due, pay the amount by July 15, 2020 to avoid penalties and interest.

We continuously strive to provide correct and accurate calculations in our TurboTax products. Sometimes that effort results in our finding errors after returns have been filed.

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you.

If you purchased a General Motors vehicle between April 1 and September 30, 2019, or a Tesla vehicle between January 1 and June 30, 2019, AND

  • Form 1040 or 1040-SR, Line 12b, Tax is less than $3,750, you won't have any additional tax due; however, we recommend you amend the return to report the correct credit on Form 8936, Qualified Plug-In Electric Drive Motor Vehicle Credit.

OR

  • Form 1040 or 1040-SR, Line 12b, Tax is greater than $3,750, we recommend you amend your tax return to report the correct credit on Form 8936, Qualified Plug-In Electric Drive Motor Vehicle Credit, and pay the additional tax due. If your tax return includes other nonrefundable credits, you may not have an additional payment due; however, you should amend your tax return to report the corrected Form 8936 and any other nonrefundable credit and/or carryover amounts.

If the tentative credit on the amended Form 8936, Qualified Plug-In Electric Drive Motor Vehicle Credit, Line 4c, isn't $3,750, verify and correct the spelling of the vehicle make (i.e. Chevy, Chevrolet, Tesla) and model. The form will calculate the correct tentative credit once the misspelling is corrected.

  2. Launch TurboTax and open your 2019 return.
  3. Before you make any changes, select File and Save As... then add Amended 2019 return to the file name to preserve your original return.
  4. Select Online and Check for Updates. Allow the program to install updates if any are available.
  5. Select the Federal Taxes tab (Personal tab if you’re using Home & Business), and then select Other Tax Situations. You may be asked to answer a few preliminary questions before you see a list of categories. Scroll down to Other Tax Forms and select Start next to Amend a Return.
