I paid real estate taxes for 2016 and 2017 in 2016. Do I deduct all in 2016?

To put it another way, do I deduct taxes in the year paid, or in the year the bill is for?

You do deduct real estate taxes (also known as property taxes) in the year paid, not in the year to which the tax applies.

  1. Federal Taxes
  2. Deductions & Credits
  3. Your Home
  4. Property Taxes
