In previous years I never had to fill out Form 1116 to get the Foreign Tax Credit. Why is it different this year and is there a way to avoid having to fill this form out?

You can elect to claim the foreign tax credit without filing form 1116 if you meet the  exemptions outline in the form 1116 instructions.
