Yes, you may deduct costs related to income reported on Form 1099-MISC as Business Expenses. Mileage is included under Vehicle Expenses. Meals (limited to 50%) are entered under Other Common Business Expenses.

When you receive Form 1099-MISC, the IRS considers you to be self-employed, which means you are in business for yourself. Your income and expenses for this activity are reported on Schedule C.

The easiest way to find Schedule C in TurboTax is to use the Search box at the top right side of the TurboTax header. Enter "schedule c", hit Enter, then click on "jump to schedule c". This will take you directly to the start of this section where you can set up your business and enter your income & expenses.

Or go to My Account >> Tools >> Topic Search. Type in "schedule c", click the topic in the list, then click "GO".

(If you are using the mobile app and don't have My Account or Tools on your screen, try logging into TurboTax from a laptop or desktop browser.)

If this is the first time you have reported this activity, we recommend you use the "Walk me through everything" option (blue button on the left). Simply follow the interview process and answer all questions as accurately as possible.

To reduce your taxable income, be sure to report all eligible expenses related to your business (TurboTax will assist you with this).
