Can I go back and add more deductions ?

Yes you can. See your situation below for instructions on how to add more deductions.

If You Haven't Submitted, or Filed Your Return Yet

  1. Open your return.
(To do this, login to TurboTax and select the Take me to my return button.
  2. Select Federal on the left, and then Deductions & Credits at the top.
  3. Now follow the screens to enter more deductions.
  • You may see options to either have TurboTax Guide me (walk you through each possible type of deduction and you can enter info when it's relevant to you), or see a list of all tax breaks, and you can select from that list to enter deductions relevant to you.

If You Already Filed Your Return
Wait until your return has either been Accepted or Rejected by the IRS. Once that occurs, do the following according to your situation:

  • If Rejected, you can simply re-open your return and follow the steps above to add more deductions.
  • If Accepted, you'll need to Amend your return. To do this, login to TurboTax and scroll down to the Your tax returns & documents section; locate the section for 2017, and select the Amend button. Now follow the on-screen instructions to add more deductions and amend your return.
