Will I get credit since I inherited a home following my mother's death, and I've been paying the taxes on this home. Where would I indicate this on my taxes?

I'm sorry for your loss.  If you have been paying the taxes on the home you inherited you can enter them as a deduction in your return.

Please follow these steps:

  1. Click on Federal > Deductions & Credits
  2. In the Your Home section, start by clicking on the Start/Revisit box next to Property Taxes.
  3. Enter your taxes on the next screen, Enter the Property Taxes You Paid.

Weebleslie, sorry for your loss. Do you own the home or does your mother's estate or her trust own the home? This is may not be an easy question and may require your estate attorney to answer. Some states vest ownership in the beneficiaries immediately, others wait until the paperwork is done. This also may depend upon how ownership passed to you. Were you a join owner, the beneficiary of a trust, or a beneficiary of your mother's will, or something else?

You can only deduct real estate property if you are the owner of the property. You cannot deduct taxes paid for a property you don't own yet.
