Weebleslie, sorry for your loss. Do you own the home or does your mother's estate or her trust own the home? This is may not be an easy question and may require your estate attorney to answer. Some states vest ownership in the beneficiaries immediately, others wait until the paperwork is done. This also may depend upon how ownership passed to you. Were you a join owner, the beneficiary of a trust, or a beneficiary of your mother's will, or something else?
You can only deduct real estate property if you are the owner of the property. You cannot deduct taxes paid for a property you don't own yet.
