Why is TurboTax entering $10,000 in my “Property, state and local tax deductions” in the itemized deduction section when I only entered around $5,000 in property taxes?

Did you have state/local income taxes withheld on the W-2 you entered?  If so, those taxes are entered in the same section as the property taxes.  The maximum that can be entered in SALT section is $10,000 if filing as Married Filing Jointly.

$10,000 is the maximum amount you can deduct in this category (if you are Married Filing Jointly). 

This category includes:

1. your property tax, 
2. state or local income taxes withheld on your W2 (see boxes 17 & 19), 
3. and state and local property taxes for a car, boat, rv, etc.
