Where did you enter the EV Charging Station Credit?
Do you have a tax liability that can be reduced by the credit?
To enter this credit you will select the following:
The credit is limited to $1,000. If you do not have a tax liability of $1,000 or more, then credit will be reduced as it is a nonrefundable credit. This means, if you were already getting a full refund of everything you paid in, you would not be eligible for the credit.
You can see your tax liability on line 16. You may also have other non refundable credits that already reduced your tax liability.
TO see your 1040 select the following: Tools>>Tax Tools>>View Tax Summary>>Preview My 1040
Thank you for the quick response.
I entered the EV charing station credit in the "Deductions and Credits" section -> "Cars and Other Things you Own" -> "Energy Efficient Vehicle Charging Station". When I enter the cost ($900) and the description I get a message that states "The total personal portion of your Alternative Vehicle Refueling Property Credit is currently $0." I don't understand why or how it calculates $0 from that.
Yes, I have a tax liability of more than 1,000. I have put in the cost of the charger and installation at 900$ and I was expecting to get a tax credit of 30% of that ($270).
Agreed. I tried it out in the program and it properly gave the credit. There may be something else on your return preventing the credit. Let's go back to the instructions for 8911 and read line 15b which states:
Enter the total of any credits on Form 1040, 1040-SR, or 1040-NR, line 19, and Schedule 3 (Form 1040), lines 2 through 5, and 7 (reduced by any general business credit reported on line 6a, any credit for prior year minimum tax reported on line 6b, or any credit to holders of tax credit bonds reported on line 6k).
Line 17 runs into AMT.
Please review your return and see where your credit is being limited.
