How do you know there is a child tax credit for the 21 year old?
If there is a child tax credit on the Form 1040 Line 28 then the information for the dependent may be in error. If so, go back and make sure the date of birth is correct and in the format mm/dd/yyyy
You can view your Form 1040 at any time using the online editions. Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the online program screen. Click on Tools. Click on View Tax Summary. Click on Preview my 1040 on the left side of the screen.
Either you entered the 21 year old's birthdate incorrectly or you are confusing the $500 credit for other dependents with the child tax credit. If your 21 year old is a full-time student you can get the $500 credit for them--it will be on line 19 of your Form 1040.

Unless you are referring to the Other Dependent tax credit of $500. That is available for all dependents age 18 or older.
