Why is this app asking for an HSA number in 12b but won’t take my answer?

If you are on the "Let's enter [name]'s HSA contirbutions" screen, there are two lines:

The first line is the amount associated with code W in box 12 of your W-2. Note that this can physically be in box 12a, 12b, 12c, or 12d - it's the letter code that matters.

This number cannot and should not be changed.

The second line asks for your "personal" HSA contribution. This IRS terminology confuses many taxpayers, because contributions made through payroll deduction are NOT personal contributions. They are called "employer contributions".

What should go into line two are only those contributions that you made directly to the HSA, not through your employer.

Once you have entered the code W amount in your W-2, you must not enter any part of it anywhere else in the return.
