The standard deduction for 2018 was increased to $12,000 for a single filer.
In terms of medical expenses, you would need to have more total itemized deductions than this $12,000 amount in order to use them. Also, medical expenses have a threshold where you can only use the amount greater than 7.5% (for 2018) of your AGI as an itemized deduction. The end result is that most people will probably use the standard deduction.
