Why is my employer added as an onsite care provider by Turbotax? It’s incorrect and I didn’t ask for that.

I am confused by how Turbotax determine care providers in Form 2441. My son went to two daycares last year and I manually input both of them in Turbotax. However, in form 2441 generated, I see my employer is added as 3rd care provider which falls under "On-site Care Provided by Employer”. The fact is that my employer never provides onsite care in my regional office here, so I totally don't understand how come it is "offering on-site care" in the eyes of Turbotax.

The only explanation I can think of is the Box 10 of $5000 (Dependent Care FSA) on W-2, but that's there every year and last year my employer was not listed as a care provider on my form 2441.

Any ideas? Thanks.

For tax purposes, whether your employer provides cash or on-site care makes no substantive difference. $5k must be subtracted from your total amount paid before calculating any credit.

It wouldn't make any difference in the final credit calculation (0 for my case), but the correctness of the form should be ensured by TurboTax. With this incorrect assumption by TurboTax, my line 16 of form 2441 now becomes the sum of all my child care expenses + $5000 DCFSA (box 10 of W2), which is an incorrect amount. It should be simply sum of my child care expenses. I used that $5000 to reimbursement part of the expenses.

well... finally I have found the root cause. One of the questions after importing my W2, there is a question about whether my employer provided onsite care, somehow my answer there was "yes" that triggered all of these hassle. After I fix that answer, it's all good now. Hopefully this post can help someone who may make the same mistake as me 🙂
