You may have answered a question in My Info incorrectly. Or does the child not have a Social Security number? If your child has an ITIN you only get the $500 credit. If your child has a SSN make sure you did not say it is not valid for employment. There is an oddly worded question that asks if the child paid for over half their support--say NO.
The Child Tax Credit is a refundable credit. That means you can only get up to the amount you owe in taxes for the credit.
However, there is an Additional Child Tax credit that is not refundable, and is located in a different area of your tax return.
