Why doesn't my child qualify for the child tax credit? I looked it up and she meets all of the requirements?

If your child meets all of the qualifications below and your income is under $200,000 ($400,000 if married filing jointly) then you will need to check your entries to make sure that you didn’t enter something to disqualify them. Double check that your child meets these requirements:

  • Have a social security number that is valid for employment in the U. S.
  • Be a U. S. citizen, U.S. national or U.S. resident
  • Be under 17 at the end of the year
  • Be related to you (son, daughter, stepchild, eligible foster child, brother, sister, stepbrother, stepsister, half-brother, half-sister, or a descendent of one of these)
  • Live with you for more than half the year
  • Not have provided more than half or his/her financial support
  • Be claimed as a dependent on your tax return
  • Not file a joint return with a spouse if married or only file to get a refund of withheld income taxes

Have you entered all of the income you received from working?   You have to enter your W-2 or self-employment income first or you will not get the child tax credit.
