Why does TT ask for installment sale info on selling a main home when it is NOT an installment sale?

TT has me going through installment sale questions without asking IF this is an installment sale, which it is not. It keeps circling back to the same questions without letting me go on past.

It depends. The reason TurboTax (TT) thinks this is an Installment Sale (Form 6252)  is that there may have been entry or a checkmark that triggered the form 6252 into your return. Here is the best way to resolve this.

Delete the Form (Desktop/Online):

  • Go to Tax Tools on the left menu, then select Tools.
  • Click on Delete a form.
  • Look for Form 6252 (Installment Sale Income). If it’s there, delete it.
  • If you are using desktop, go to the forms mode, select the form in the left-pane of your screen.  Once selected and when it appears in the right pane, delete the form at the bottom of the page.
  • Log out of your return and then back in to save the changes.

Now reenter your information.

  • Go to wages and income
  • less common income
  • Sale of Home (gain or loss)
  • There is an entry below that is titled installment sale. Avoid that.

Why does TT ask for installment sale info on selling a main home when it is NOT an installment sale?

Hi Dave F,

Thank you so much for answering.  I did try your solution (I have the online version of TurboTax), but even though I was able to delete the Form 6252 and I signed off and signed back on, the installment questions came up again, and it just loops through the questions again and again.  There must be something that I've done wrong, I hope, or TT needs to fix this, or someone needs to tell me how to get around it.  Any further ideas?

Your best option is to open your return and delete the sale using this TurboTax Online link: Home Sale

  1. Click the trashcan icon next to the address to delete the sale.
  2. Now re-enter the sale information and be sure to say "No" for any installment sale questions.
