Why does it ask me to fill out Line 2 on MSA Limits Worksheet when I never entered an MSA? I only entered an HSA.

There are a couple of ways to accidentally indicate that you have an MSA:

  • On the "Tell us about your health accounts" screen, you might have accidentally checked "MSA". Note that TurboTax is somewhat like an elephant - once you check something, sometimes it never forgets.
  • When you entered a form 1099-SA, you checked that it was for an MSA, not an HSA (the same form is used for both).

Oh, in addition, you may have put a code 'R' in box 12 of your W-2 (this is the code for an MSA contribution through your employer whereas 'W' is the code for an HSA contribution).

In any case, rather than going back and forth trying to find what you did, just delete all your MSA and HSA data (they are intertwined so you have to do both), and re-add your HSA data. To do this, please do the following:

1. make a copy of your W-2(s) (if you don't have the paper copies)

2. delete your W-2(s) (use the garbage can icon next to the W-2(s) on the Income screen

*** Desktop***

3. go to View (at the top), choose Forms, and select the desired form. Note the Delete Form button at the bottom of the screen.

*** Online ***

3. go to Tax Tools (on the left), and navigate to Tools->Delete a form

4. delete form(s) 1099-SA (if one), 8889-T, 8889-S (if one), 8853-T, and 8853-S (if one)

5. go back and re-add your W-2(s), preferably adding them manually

6. go back and redo the entire HSA interview.
