Why did my $3600 child tax credit not increase my refund?

One reason your refund may not have increased is because you received the Advanced Child Tax Credit throughout the year. The amount you received is reconciled with the amount of the Child Tax Credit calculated on your income tax return. If the amounts are the same, the result is zero and your refund would not increase.

To see your Child Tax Credit amount, preview your 1040.    The refundable child tax credit or additional child tax credit form Schedule 8812 is on Form 1040, Line 28.

Why did my $3600 child tax credit not increase my refund?

We didn’t receive the tax credit during the year. We purposefully delayed it for our tax return.

What is shown on your Form 1040 Line 28 for the child tax credit?

If using the TurboTax online editions -

You can view your Form 1040 at any time using the online editions. Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the screen. Click on Tools. Click on View Tax Summary. Click on Preview my 1040 on the left side of the screen.

If using the TurboTax desktop editions -

Click on Forms.  In Forms mode click on the Form 1040 on left side of the screen to open the form

Why did my $3600 child tax credit not increase my refund?

It’s says $3600 on line 28, but my refund amount did not change when I entered that section.

Why did my $3600 child tax credit not increase my refund?

Because it was already giving it to you before you entered that section.  Turbo Tax starts out giving you the full amount so your refund is high.  If you had received some during the year it would have subtracted out what you got and you would have seen your refund go down.

Your tax refund is the difference between Line 24 Total Tax and Line 33 Total Payments.

Your federal tax refund is reported on Line 34
