Where else would I find sales expenses on a home I bought in 2004, but sold in 2017? I know longer have that paperwork.

The courthouse will have records for any transfer taxes that may have been paid, as well as the expense for deed recordings. Aside from that, the rest might be able to be obtained from the realtor, if applicable.  If not, you should estimate a reasonable amount for any expense you know you had at the time with the exception of points or loan origination fees that would have been deducted in the year of purchase.  

Examples of regular closing costs when purchasing a home:

  • Legal charges
  • Title charges, 
  • recording fees, 
  • transfer tax, 
  • Points paid on the buyer’s behalf by the seller (common in certain areas)
