You will post the sale of a second home as an investment.

Log into TurboTax

  1. Go to Wages & Income
  2. Scroll to Investment income
  3. Select Stocks, Cryptocurrency, Mutual Funds, Bonds, Other
  4. Did you sell any of these investments in 2023
    1. One selection is Land or second home
    2. Say Yes
  5. Three boxes appear
    1. Select Other
    2. Continue
  6. Follow the Interview to  post your Second Home sale.

Different versions may look a little different with respect to some of the details on the screen, but every CD/downloaded version will allow you to enter all of the required details to report the transaction on your tax return.

There may not be a specific section that will help you to enter the various changes to the cost basis of the second home, but if you have entered the date of the transaction, the cost basis you calculated from your records, and the proceeds from the sale, that should be all that is required.  Answering these questions and putting in those values is all part of the 'interview' process.
