If your roof is eligible for the energy credit, here's how you enter it into Turbo Tax:
Go to Deductions & Credits.
Click the I'll choose what I work on button.
Go to Your Home.
Click Start or Update by Home Energy Credits.
The ninth entry in the list of what qualifies is Metal or asphalt roofs with qualified coatings.
Click Yes, I made energy-efficient improvements or have a carryforward.
The next screens ask you about your home.
On the next screen, to the right of Metal or Asphalt Roof , put your total cost. Click the Learn more button to see what exactly you can deduct.
After the questions about prior years, you'll get to a screen with a list on energy-efficient improvements. Click Continue.
The next screen asks about carryforwards from 2015.
Your total energy credit will show up on Form 5695, and will also be carried to line 53 of your 1040.
