Its in the medical expense section
Where exactly in the medical expenses section? There is no page that references it.
Where exactly in the Medical Expenses section? There is no page within the section that references it or asks about it.
Go to Deductions & Credits->Medical->HSA, MSA, 1099-SA. This will begin the HSA interview.
As you go through the HS interview, you should come to a screen titled "Let's enter [name]'s HSA contributions".
The first line on this screen should be the "employer" contributions, i.e., contributions made through the employer. This comes from the code W amount in box 12 on your W-2.
The second line on this screen should be your "personal" contributions, that is, contributions not made through the employer (i.ee., directly to the HSA). You can enter this amount on the second line. NOTE: do not enter any part of the code W amount into the second line.
This tax season, this screen did not appear for some taxpayers. Let us know if this is the case.
Hello! There are no HSA questions in the Medical section that asks about additional HSA contributions. The only reference to HSA is confirming what was distributed from my HSA that was detailed on my W2.
OK. You went to Deductions & Credits->Medical->HSA, MSA, 1099-SA, correct? The very first screen asks you what type of health accounts you have, and presumably you answered Health Savings Account for you and perhaps your spouse.
This is the beginning of the HSA interview, which goes through a lot of screens until it ends with the "HSA Summary". Did you see the HSA Summary?
You said, "The only reference to HSA is confirming what was distributed from my HSA that was detailed on my W2". But this is not how it works. It sounds like you received a 1099-SA, which reports on HSA distributions and that you perhaps entered this in the HSA interview. But the 1099-SA has nothing to do with "employer" contributions reported on your W-2 in box 12 with a code of W, so I am not sure what you are referring to.
So did you receive a 1099-SA? Were you able to enter it in the HSA interview? Did you see the HSA Summary? Did you see the screen titled "Let's enter [name]'s HSA contributions"?
Earlier in the season, some taxpayers never saw the "Let's enter..." screen, so they could not enter their "personal" contributions. The workaround is to do an HSA Reset to start the HSA process over again.
HSA RESET
***Reset***
1. make a copy of your W-2(s) (if you don't have the paper copies)
2. delete your W-2(s) (use the garbage can icon next to the W-2(s) on the Income screen)
*** Desktop/Windows***
3. Go to the upper right and click on Forms, and
4. Select the desired form (1099-SA (if one), 8889-T, and 8889-S (if one)). Note the Delete Form button at the bottom of the form’s screen.
*** Desktop/Mac***
3. Switch to Forms Mode by selecting the Forms icon.
4. From the menu, select the form (1099-SA (if one), 8889-T, and 8889-S (if one)) you want to remove (if you don't see it, select Open Form at the top). From the Forms menu, select Remove [form name].
*** Online ***
3. go to Tax Tools (on the left), and navigate to Tools->Delete a form
4. delete form(s) 1099-SA (if one), 8889-T, and 8889-S (if one)
5. go back and re-add your W-2(s), preferably adding them manually
6. go back and redo the entire HSA interview....
I appreciate your info. Thank you.
I’m just referring to making additional contributions before filing. I haven’t received a 1099SA for the contributions I want to make.
And I misspoke previously, the 1099SA I received and inputted already is related to my employer.
The 1099-SA forms is not related to your contributions. A 1099-SA with a distribution code of '1' reports (normally) on money distributed to pay for qualified medical expenses. A 1099-SA with a distribution code of '2' reports on excess contributions that have been withdrawn from the HSA prior to the original due date.
If you want to make contributions now before April 15th for 2025, you enter that as a "personal" contribution as I described above. The interview does not describe it that way, perhaps that's what was confusing. But all contributions for 2025 that did not go through the employer, all the way up to April 15, 2026, are entered as a "personal" contribution.
NOTE: Be very sure that the HSA custodian knows that this contribution, which you will make by tomorrow, is for tax year 2025.
Thanks again. I understand however my software does not provide a in HSA or Medical section that allows for personal contributions to be inputted. I’m not sure why or if I’m doing something wrong but no screen, question, interview, etc asks whether I made any additional/personal HSA contributions personally. The only question that is remotely close is “did I have any other Medical Expenses” where I can fill in a blank box and include an amount. But I’m pretty sure that’s not accurate.
What software do you have? TurboTax Desktop (for Mac or Windows)? TurboTax Online. Both certainly have HSA sections.
"The only question that is remotely close is “did I have any other Medical Expenses” where I can fill in a blank box and include an amount. But I’m pretty sure that’s not accurate. " - You are right, this is not in the HSA interview. This is in, I believe, the Schedule A interview, which is at Deductions & Credits->Medical->Medical Expenses.
The HSA interview is at Deductions & Credits->Medical->1099-SA, HSA, MSA
Were you asked about HDHP coverage? HDHP is High Deductible Health Plan, and to be able to contribute to an HSA, you need to be covered by an HDHP and have no conflicting coverage.
And did you do the HSA Reset that I described above?
