What qualifies as a tuition expense for New York State?

According to Turbotax, the following cannot be deducted: -Fees for course-related books, supplies, equipment, and non-academic activities, even if the fees are required to be paid to the institution as a condition of enrollment or attendance.

So I can't deduct a specific textbook and lab supplies, but may I deduct typical notebooks, pens, etc?
