What is considered "qualified dependent care expenses", in Hawaii on the N-15 form?

We can find the answer to your question by turning directly to the Hawaii Department of Taxation.

First of all we note that Hawaii state Form N-15 is for part-year and nonresidents (but you probably knew that already).

Second, we look at the Form N-15 instructions for Line 47, as found on Page 29 of the following document:

There we see that the state Credit for Child and Dependent Care Expenses is not available at all to nonresidents, but there may be a partial credit available to part-year residents.

Third, we are referred by Hawaii to look to the instructions for Hawaii Schedule X, Part II, Page 38, as can be viewed in the same document as that above.  There we find a somewhat lengthy description of what particular "Household" and "Employment-related" expenses can be included as qualified amounts spent for the state credit.

We won't copy and repost the Hawaii Department of Taxation discussion here in this answer, because of the length of the material.  However, you are encouraged to read it for yourself on Page 38 (and the beginning of Page 39), using the link the the above document.  That will give you the detailed information necessary for your answer, with respect to what are considered qualified dependent care expenses by Hawaii.

Once you've determined a final figure (in dollars) of allowable expenses, you can then enter that number into TurboTax, and use it to answer the related Hawaii state questions.
