Did you pay other taxes on the income (to the foreign country?) Were you a bona fide resident of the other country prior to returning to the United States?
Hi, Yes for both questions. Thank you! Appreciate if you can kindly response.
For some reason I missed this email earlier.
I don’t understand what you mean by “filing your foreign income taxes.”
if you are a US citizen or permanent resident, you are required to file a US tax return and report all your worldwide income and pay US income tax on it. That would be a normal form 1040, and if you were self-employed, you would include a schedule C. If you were an employee, and the employee does not issue a W-2 because they are not a US company, you still report your income in the normal way. There should be a place on the income page for foreign income, if not, you can enter it as “other income” at the bottom of the income and deductions page.
then, if you also paid for an income taxes on the same wages, you would use form 1116 to claim a credit or deduction on your US tax for the amount of foreign tax that you paid, which will reduce the amount of US tax you pay on the same income. That form should be on the deductions and credits page.
If you simply follow the interview step-by-step, you should be taken to all of the appropriate places to enter your foreign income and to report the foreign taxes that you paid in order to claim the deduction or credit.
