Vehicle depreciation not properly calculating

We purchased an RV (over 6000lbs) in 2021 and 80% was for business use. For 2021 we chose the special depreciation allowance and was able to depreciate the full 80% the first year (114k).

For years 2022-2025 it was 100% used for business, and TurboTax has been calculating the depreciation as follows:

2022- 57k

2023- 34k

2024- 20k

TurboTax Online has not allowed me to change the values in any of these boxes over the years, it only asks for the date put into service (2021) and purchase price. It's only now (while doing 2025 taxes) that I realized the total depreciated amount is now greater than the original cost of the vehicle, which doesn't seem correct. Do we need to amend past returns? The business has not made any income, always at a net loss even before adding depreciation expenses. So there's no business income to offset. Is it even worth amending at this point?

It depends.  If it did not have any affect on your return, then no, you do not need to amend.  However, it is a good idea to double check the previous years to be sure it did not affect your return.

If it does have an affect on your return and you need to amend your return, you can also submit a claim under the accuracy guarantee policy that TurboTax has.

Vehicle depreciation not properly calculating

Unfortunately this issue does appear to have affected our prior tax returns. I attempted to submit a claim under the Accuracy Guarantee however one of the requirements is that I must first receive a notice from the IRS. How do I go about amending those past returns? Since TurboTax self-calculates certain fields, I'm concerned we may encounter the same issue again when trying to correct them.

For context, we recently signed up for the Expert Full Service product. At the end of our session, our TurboTax expert told us we were looking at a $4000 refund. This didn't seem accurate, so I requested a breakdown of the deductions, as I suspected it may be related to how depreciation was entered. We were told that we would not be able to review the forms unless we completed and filed the return. The total cost to file is quoted at $1200 for federal and state, despite being told we qualify for the $150 "all in" promo offer. All of this prompted me to review our past depreciation amounts, which is when I discovered they appear to have been overstated in previous years.  I had hoped that using the Premium service would help identify issues like this, but it seems our expert did not catch it either. In fact, it appears the depreciation may have been further increased with the current draft filing.

With all of that said, can we use our current "Full Expert Service" to help us amend previous returns and properly file our current one? Last year, we used Expert Assist, which is $209 (much less than $1200), and this product includes a 100% accuracy-guaranteed final review (although the review did not catch the issue last year). If we downgrade to this product, will an Expert confirm and assist us with the amendments? Additionally, is there a form or different approach we can use this year that would allow us to address the issue without having to file 3 separate amendments? Thank you for your help.

TurboTax Expert Services can prepare an amended return if the original return also used that service, in most cases at no additional cost if due to a preparer error. If the error relates to a return that wasn't prepared using Expert Services, amended returns are not included.

Expert Assist should be able to help determine if the prior year depreciation issues were due to an input error. Or you can post your questions here in the Community for more help.
