You can go back and change your choice between the standard deduction and itemizing at any time before you file your return.
TurboTax automatically selects the option that gives you the biggest tax break based on the info you entered, but you can manually override this.
To change your selection in TurboTax Online, follow these steps:
-Select Federal from the left menu and then Deductions & Credits.
-Scroll to the bottom of the Your tax breaks page and select Wrap up tax breaks or Done with Deductions.
-Continue through the screens until you reach the one titled The Standard Deduction is Right for You! or Itemizing Deductions is Right for You!
-Check the box for Change my deduction to see a comparison of both amounts and select the one you want to use.
With downloaded desktop version of deluxe federal + state, I followed the instructions you provided, however the software is still not presenting both options to select standard or itemized. It simply notes good news that standard deduction has been elected...no other option available. Please advise ASAP!!
Actually, I believe there is a bug/error...It looks like I'm receiving an on-page error that notes: "Hmm, looks like we've hit a snag...We recommend you revisit the last topic you were working on to make sure all your info's correct." And then it routes me to some information about Qualified Business Income Deduction Summary and a QBI deduction, which I do not recalling any entry or reference in what I've populated for my 2025 return thus far. Is there another way to change to itemized to compare it to standard...Or do I need to start a new return and re-enter everything, being sure to elect itemized whenever it is presented? That would stink to have to re-enter all, but am running out of time. Please advise ASAP!!
