Turbo Tax Premier - why won't it allow a correction to 2019 HSA date netered?

It depends on where you are correcting the HSA date. If you are getting unexpected results, I recommend deleting what is in the system and revisiting the HSA Section.

To begin the process, start with deleting:

  • From the left menu, select Tax Tools
  • Tools
  • Delete a Form
    • Delete all Health Savings Account related forms: Form 8889-T and if you are filing jointly Form 8889-S

Next, go back to Form W-2 and verify that Box 12 Code W is entered.

Another option: Go to Less Common Income to check for any extraneous details:

  • From the left menu, select Federal
  • On the Wages & Income screen, scroll down from All income to Less Common Income, Click Show More
  • Go to 1099-SA, HSA, MSA and click Revisit

For help in entering the HSA Contributions and Distributions:

What is a Health Savings Account (HSA)? has a link included for Where do I enter my HSA Contribution?

Click here for steps for the 1099-SA: Where do I enter my 1099-SA?

TurboTax will automatically gather the details from your input and populate Form 8889 to report the contributions and any distributions for 2019.

The question should have been - why won't it allow a correction to 2019 HSA data entered?

Your response did not help.

When entering the HSA information the page with "Let's enter Doug's HSA contributions" had a box for entering contributions with drawn.  The person entering the information misunderstood the question and entered the entire 2019 contribution as "withdrawn", thinking it referred to distributions.

Afterwards, when we were trying to correct that page would not display and after responding to the page "did Doug have Medicare at any time in 2019" the program would revert back to the main wages and income page.

After multiple tries the page "Let's enter Doug's HSA contributions" did appear, we removed the error and the program corrected and we filed the return.

I notice that the question asking about contributions withdrawn no longer appears.

Your response didn't help.

The first option you gave says to verify that code W is entered in box 12 on form W-2.  It isn't because it doesn't apply to the W-2's entered, so we didn't follow through with the deleting.

The second option doesn't work because when we go to Wages & Income no option to "Show more" displays.

At this point, we have no idea what state your tax return is in or what data you have or have not entered.

I would strongly encourage you to delete your HSA data and start over, rather than endless loops through the HSA interview.

To delete any HSA information and start over, please do the following:

1. make a copy of your W-2(s) (if you don't have the paper copies)

2. delete your W-2(s) (use the garbage can icon next to the W-2(s) on the Income screen

*** Desktop***

3. go to View (at the top), choose Forms, and select the desired form. Note the Delete Form button at the bottom of the screen.

*** Online ***

3. go to Tax Tools (on the left), and navigate to Tools->Delete a form

4. delete form(s) 1099-SA (if one), 8889-T, and 8889-S (if one)

5. go back and re-add your W-2(s), preferably adding them manually

6. go back and redo the entire HSA interview.
