This is a separate deduction that is above the standard deduction. TurboTax will automatically calculate it based on your date of birth and your income. There is not a special section or box to check. Just enter your correct information and TurboTax will take it from there. If eligible you will find this on Schedule 1-A Part V and line 13b of your form 1040.
For Tax Year 2025 through 2028, seniors may claim an additional deduction of $6,000 per taxpayer over 65. This is NOT a refundable credit. This is a deduction of your income.
This bonus deduction is ONLY for those over 65, it does not apply to those who are blind and under 65

I think I am using the easy form, it does not give me a tools option. I am 68 and my husband is 59. I qualify for the deduction and our income together is under $80,000 and we are filing married jointly. I have checked my birthdate and it is correct. I am so frustrated trying to get this deduction, I have filed turbo tax for years and am considering changing after this struggle
If you are age 65 or older and meet the requirement, the additional deduction is automatically added on your federal tax return.
Standard deductions for 2025

I understand the rules of the new bonus of $6,000 per eligible senior over 65.,I have been told that turbo tax will automatically apply this but it is not doing this for me. It is showing my deductions as being $33,100 for my husband and myself filing jointly
@tdsmithtn The additional deduction is not added to the standard deduction.

Using the TurboTax online editions you must accessing the 2025 tax return, either from the Wages & Income section or the Deductions & Credits section for the links on the left side of the online program screen to be visible.
I am using the 2025 filing page and have gone under the Deduction pages but it is only showing a deduction of $33,500 for my husband and myself. I am the only one over 65. There is no Tools tab on the left to look up Schedule 1-A. It just is not giving me the $6,000 Senior deduction. At this point i am ready to try my luck with another company. I have used Turbo Tax for years and will think about researching other companies. I have always trusted TurboTax but this year I have lost faith. And I can’t seem to talk to anyone without having to pay for the service when I feel like this is a TurboTax system issue
@tdsmithtn If only one of you is age 65 or older then the standard deduction is $33,100

The additional standard deduction of $6,000 would be entered on your federal tax return, Form 1040 Line 13b.
What TurboTax program are you using? The TurboTax online web-based editions? Or the TurboTax desktop editions installed on your personal computer?
I am using the web based version. I just pull it up on my web browser using the free version since I am not itemizing.
The “senior deduction” is added automatically by the software based on the date of birth and filing status you entered into MY INFO. You do not need to take any extra steps to enter it. (And…the new senior deduction has nothing to do with whether you are getting Social Security)
2025 STANDARD DEDUCTION AMOUNTS
SINGLE $15,750 (65 or older/legally blind + $2000)
MARRIED FILING SEPARATELY $15,750 (65 or older/legally blind +1600)
MARRIED FILING JOINTLY $31,500 (65 or older/legally blind + $1600)
HEAD OF HOUSEHOLD $23,625 (65 or older/legally blind + $2000)
For 2025 through 2028 there is an extra deduction amount of up to $6000 per individual 65 or older filing Single, MFJ, or HOH which is phased out for taxpayers with modified adjusted gross income over $75,000 for single filers and $150,000 for joint filers.
(The deduction phases out completely at $175.000 Single or HOH, or $250,000 joint)
The $6,000 senior deduction will be calculated on 1040 Schedule 1-A page 2 Part V Enhanced Deduction for Seniors which goes to 1040 line 13b. It is separate and in addition to the Standard Deduction or your Itemized Deductions on 1040 line 12e. Turbo Tax automatically includes it.
