Do I have to use turbo tax deluxe to file if I'm claiming the education tax credit
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
The Form 8863 Education Credits is included in TurboTax Free Edition and Basic Live.
For further information please see the TurboTax website: Commonly Filed Tax Forms and Schedules (Down at the bottom of the page)
It had me upgrade to deluxe because of the education portion, and nowhere could I navigate to change it back to free file, if thats included when filing at no charge there was no need to use the deluxe for me personally. I even tried to click upgrade to see if it would give all the brackets of filing but only shows the ones above deluxe. So I paid for Fed and State to file when I didn't need to.
I am sorry you are having a problem with this. You could call us and explain the situation and if it was determined that you upgraded needlessly, we may be able to help you.
I suggest you look at your fees first to see what you are being charged for. You can do this by following these instructions:
You can view your fees by clicking on the "Tax Tools" option on your left menu bar, then choose "Tools", then "My Fees". If you feel your fees are not correct, please click on the "Help with My Fees" option at the bottom of the "My Turbo Tax Fees" screen for suggestions on how to reduce your fees.
Your can clear your return and start over also, by following these instructions:
1. Look for the "Tax Tools" option on your left menu bar in TurboTax and click on it
2. Find the "Tools" option and click on it
3. Look for "Clear & Start Over " in the menu of options and click on that option to start your return over
Will these options be available if my return is already submitted?
If you have filed your tax return and then discover that you need to claim the education credit you will have to wait until the IRS either accepts or rejects your tax return.
If the return is rejected you will correct the error that caused the rejection, add the education credit and refile your return.
If the return was accepted by the IRS then you will have to file an amended tax return using Form 1040X to add the education credit to your tax return.
This link to the TurboTax Help page How to amend (change or correct) a return you already filed provides information on how to amend your tax return.
