I bought a car this year and I was wondering if this was something eligible for a tax return.
This will only matter if you itemize your deductions. You either itemize your deductions or take a standard deduction, which is what the government gives you for your filing status. See below for a standard deduction chart.
If you're taking off the registration fee, you take it as a deduction on Schedule A.
1. Go to Deductions & Credits
2. Select I'll choose what I work on.
3. Go to Cars and Other Things you Own
4. Go to Car Registration Fees.
Depending on the state in which you live, you may or may not be able to deduct it.
If you're taking off sales tax paid on a new car, you take it as a deduction on Schedule A.
1. Go to Deductions & Credits.
2. Select I'll choose what I work on.
3. Choose Estimates and Other Taxes Paid.
4. Select Sales Tax.
