If you report the asset sale from the 1099-B in the program the short term loss will flow to line 7 as a positive number but you can see by reading the text on that line that it is characterized as a loss.
"On my tax form it is a negative value (i.e. a loss)."
What do you mean by "my" tax form? Are you the parent or the child? Are you working on the parent's tax return or the child's tax return? Is "my tax form" the parent's tax return or the child's tax return? You have to enter the amount from Schedule D, Line 7 of the parent's tax return in the Child's Income section of the child's tax return.
"The "Parents' Capital Gains" screen won't allow me to enter a negative value for Schedule D, Line 7."
What exactly do you mean by "won't allow me"? What happens when you try to enter it? If you get an error message, what is the exact message, word for word? Are you entering just a minus sign and the amount, such as -1200? You have to enter the minus sign before the number, not after the number. And you can't enter any spaces. Will it let you enter a positive amount?
.
You can enter a negative amount for Schedule D line 7 on the Parents' Capital Gains screen if the parents have a capital loss. Entering zero would make the tax calculation incorrect.
