Taking Child Tax Credit out of my taxes

So I claim my grandson on my taxes, since I've looked after him for years. He turned 17, January 2021, but received child tax credits for him. When I'm filing and put in the child tax credit under "child and other dependent tax credit" after I typed in the amount, all plus a little more was taken away from my total amount in federal. Is their a reason behind this? I know some have said no money was taken away from them.

Thanks for any help I can get.

Ok ... let me explain what you are seeing in the REFUND METER... in the beginning of the interview they program gave you the entire CTC in full ... then much later in the interview you are asked how much of the credit you got in advance ... as written on the IRS 6419 letter.   At that point the amount you got in advance reduces the full credit which reduces the refund by that amount and/or increases your balance due.

Review the actual form 1040 line 28 and the form 8812 to see how the credit is being calculated and reported on the return.

Yes,

when you enter your personal information into the TurboTax program and you list a dependent who makes you eligible for the Child Tax Credit, that credit is figured into your tax liability. (So it might show as a refund)

Later in the interview, TurboTax asks about the Advance Payments.

The Advanced Payments are always subtracted from the credit which will affect your tax due or refund expected.

There are situations where people have received the Advance Payments for a dependent that they are no longer claiming.

In these cases, many of the people are not having to reduce their refunds although they are no longer eligible for the credit.

This may be what you are reading, that people who SHOULD be having their refunds lowered aren't.
